For years, Bismillah Biryani has stood alone in Michelin's biryani universe. Not anymore. The race is on.

Meet our newest company: Biryani Osawa of Tokyo, Japan — a reservations-only restaurant helmed by Chef Takamasa Osawa, which just earned its first Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2026.

The scoreboard reads: Biryani Osawa Japan, 1. Bismillah Biryani Singapore, 9.

That biryani is now earning Michelin recognition in Japan speaks volumes. This is a dish that was born on the subcontinent, carried across oceans, and is now inspiring chefs in the most unexpected corners of the world to stake their name on it. That is the power of the most flavourful rice dish on earth.

Across every city the Michelin Guide covers globally, no other biryani-focused restaurant comes close to 9 Bib Gourmand recognitions. And given that biryani's heartlands — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh — have no Michelin Guide at all, the true depth of this achievement is even harder to overstate.

Without Michelin publishing a formal global biryani leaderboard, we'll say it plainly: all available evidence points to Bismillah Biryani as the most Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognised biryani restaurant in the world — and by a very wide margin.

Welcome to the universe, Biryani Osawa. It's good to have company.
